Domains

You'll need a domain name, a unique name that identifies your site located in the address bar in the top of your browser window. Sometimes they're called URL's (Uniform Resource Locator) or Permalinks.  Domains are not owned but rented, and they can continue to be used as long as you pay the yearly fee. The best domains are short, meaningful and clear. Search Engines index and rank websites for relevance based on search words. For maximum site exposure, consider including a popular search term relative to your business in the domain. More aboutKeywords in the Domain.

Here's a tool you can use to see if the domain you want is available.  There are about 280 domain extensions including geographic ones like .at for Austria, which is unrestricted and can be used by anyone.  Not all domains are unrestriced, though.

The most popular extension are .com, .net and .org.  Originally,  .net was for internet service companies or intranet sites, and .org was for non-profit organizations.  These definitions don't apply anymore and are used freely.
